LENS IMPLANT PROCEDURES

In patients not fit or suitable for laser vision correction, the doctors choose to implant ICL to correct refractive errors. In this case, a micro-thin artificial lens is placed in front of the natural lens of your eyes. The artificial lens enables the natural lens to focus on different objects. Even though this procedure is invasive, it does not disturb the natural mechanism of your eyes.

LENS EXCHANGE PROCEDURES

Also known as Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE), this procedure is only advisable if someone is unfit for laser as well as the lens implant procedure. In this case, the clear, natural lenses of the eyes are surgically removed and an artificial intraocular (ICL) lens is placed inside your eyes. This procedure ensures sharper focus and corrects the refractive error of your eyes. Generally, this operation is prescribed to patients with presbyopia as well as to the patients suffering from both moderate to severe hyperopia and presbyopia. This procedure is similar to cataract surgery.

EVOLUTION OF LASER PROCEDURES

Refractive error is the most common ophthalmic abnormality that leads to visual impairments across the world. Traditionally, the spectacles were the only treatment for such problems. However, for problems like astigmatism, myopia, hyperopia etc. the spectacles have not been that effective. Since about two-thirds of the ophthalmologic problems can be sorted out by changing the shape of the cornea, the idea of the refractive surgery flourished.

Even though the previous techniques of eye surgery were extremely painful, the advent of lasers changed it all. The use of lasers for changing the shape of the cornea was a step ahead. At different stages of evolution of the laser technique, different problems were identified and overcome. The main procedures that are currently used by the eye surgeons are PRK, LASIK, and a recently introduced technique, known as SMILE.

In the PRK procedure, the outer layer of cornea (epithelium) is removed or scraped and then laser is applied to reshape cornea to correct the vision. The potential chances for infection, reduction of visual acuity, and corneal scarrings are some of the most common hazards of this technique.

LASIK sorted out most of them. In LASIK, a corneal flap of about 110-130 micron depth is created before the procedure. The laser is applied to reshape the cornea to correct refractive error. Due to the presence of the flap, this procedure can develop complications, glare (related to flap or flapless, tears, holes), poor night vision etc.

The modern flapless SMILE technique is best among all the laser surgeries. The corneal sensitivity tends to restore faster in SMILE. The procedure is almost painless, and the patients hardly feel any dryness. As the procedure is entirely flapless, there are reduced chances of visual distortions and no chances of complications occurring from flap dislocations. Right now, SMILE is the most advanced solution that is gaining the attention and approval of the surgeons across the world.
